International Partners and Project Funded

Title: USAID/HIV/AIDS/STIs Youth Project
Start and end dates: 1st October, 1999- 30th September 2004
Results: VYC partnered with organized groups such as Guyana Table Tennis Association, Malteenoes Sports Club, Guyana Junior Chamber and others to bring vital HIV and AIDS messages to in-school and out-of-school youth in region 4, using participatory workshops, and peer education. An example of VYC’s innovation in this regard, is the first national literacy competition for youth on HIV/AIDS.

Donor: UNESCO Paris
Title: Guyana Information Youth Project
Start and end dates: 2002- 2004
Results: This initiative was in response to VYC’s interest in the economic development of youth by addressing the issue of sustainable livelihoods. VYC focused on several youth business interventions by providing non-financial support to young entrepreneurs, such as, training to on business start-up, Information and Communication Technology training and mentoring for the individuals.

Title: Business and Information Communication Technology
Start and end dates: 6th March 2003 -5 th March 2004
Results: The overall goal of the intervention was to improve human security with a focus on preparing young people with IT related skills to improve their livelihoods. The project provided entrepreneurial skills training and facilitated business development linkages for 100 low-income out of school youth. Additionally, the project provided access to Information Technology for 200 youth in region 4.

Title: Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention Project 1 and II
Start and end dates: 1st October 2004- 30th September 2009
Results: The HIV/AIDS workplace comprehensive programme was executed in 35 companies with over 5,000 workers receiving awareness education, peer education training and policy development assistance. Additionally, the project aimed to increase awareness among 3,600 youth in and out of school on HIV/AIDS interventions, and provide nutritional, psychological, educational and home assistance to 120 orphans and vulnerable children and their parents.

Donor: Dutch National Youth Council – through the Government of the Netherlands, Commonwealth Youth Program and the Private Sector
Title: YES Spark*
Start and end dates: 2005-2007
Results: 15 young persons were trained as entrepreneurs on how to start their own businesses. Furthermore, 5 entrepreneurs were assisted in starting their own business through loans up to $1.5 million. A revolving fund was established and maintained for 3 years in partnership with Commonwealth Youth program and Citizen Bank Guyana Ltd. Linkages with GO-Invest and several private sector businesses were formed to partner with the young entrepreneurs to finance aspects of their business.

Title: Infectious Disease Control in Regions 5-7
Start and end dates: March 2008 – July 2009
Results: Two regional hospitals were supplied with medical equipment such as ultra sound machines, centrifuges, microscopes, and autoclaves. An Infectious Disease Control community awareness programme was implemented in regions 5 and 7. The objective of the project was to strengthen diagnostic capacities of two regional hospitals to detect critical and life threatening infectious diseases among Guyanese residing in regions 5 and 7.

Title: Creating Purposeful Change Agents
Start and end dates: July 2009 – August 2009 extended to Sept 2009
Results: 100 youth were mobilised from the Lodge Community High school, Lodge community and its environs. The youth were equipped with the tools necessary to be change agents in their schools and community. The project educated them on peace activities, methods of negotiation and conflict resolution/transformation. Secondly, the project increased youth awareness and knowledge on their fundamental rights more particularly in the areas of abuse, gender, ethnicity, and religion. Furthermore, they were given the opportunity to developed their skills in the use of computers, creative arts, sewing and sports over a 6-week period.

Title – VOICE Volunteers for International Cooperation and Empowerment
Duration – ongoing

Cuso International is a Canadian volunteer sending organization that has worked in Guyana since its formation in the 1960s.  Cuso’s mission statement is “Workingin inclusive partnerships to eradicate poverty through equitable and sustainable development. Volunteers are placed with VYC for 6-12 months assisting with Women Empowerment and Career Guidance.

International Private Sector

Donor: Exxon Mobil

Title: VYC’s Afterschool Interactive Math and Science Program

Start and end dates: 2012 – present

Results: ExxonMobil supports VYC’s Afterschool Interactive Math and Science Program since 2012. With the endorsement from the Ministry of Education and support from ExxonMobil, the organization is helping to improve the Science and Math skills of High school youth in a number of schools in region 4 using STEM education. The program uses the existing school curriculum, grades 9, 10 and 11 teachers through various interactive activities to expand the learning of students. The subjects taught include: English Language, Human and Social Biology, Biology, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Physics and Chemistry.

Title: Big Brothers & Big Sisters Program

Start and end dates: 2003- present

Results: Guyana Goldfield Inc/ AGM Inc. supports the strengthening of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program has been hosted by VYC since 2003 with the aim of assisting disadvantaged children who face many obstacles to access mentoring and educational support in order to reach their fullest potential.
The program heavily focuses on helping primary school students perform well academically. Thus, VYC will include the application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) combine with its mentoring to reach primary school children in communities of Albouystown and Lodge.
